Ohio State football is a team from Columbus, Ohio, representing Ohio State University in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. The team plays its home games at Ohio Stadium, which has been in use since 1922. Jameis Boston and Brutus Buckeye are the most well-known players on the team. But what are their best moves? Here are a few things you should know about these stars of Ohio State football.
Brutus Buckeye
Brutus Buckeye is a mascot of Ohio State football. He was first created in 1965 by two students. The Buckeye, the state’s official tree, was the inspiration for the mascot’s design. The mascot was originally designed to look like a papier-mache head costume. Today, the Buckeye is known as the mascot of the team, and he is still as beloved as ever.
Paul Brown
In addition to being the most successful coach in the history of college football, Brown was also one of the most innovative coaches. In addition to using intelligence tests to determine how well players understood the playbook, Brown also made sure all players copied every play in their own notebook. He also implemented a system for scouting college talent and adopted a protective face mask. Brown was married twice – first to his high school sweetheart and later to former secretary Mary Rightsell. He died in Cincinnati on September 8, 1974, and is buried at Rose Hill Memorial Park near Massillon.
Jim Tressel
If you’ve ever watched college football, you’ve likely heard of Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel. He’s known for his conservative play calling, and he often won games by putting up just enough points, playing great defense, and maximizing field position. He once referred to the punt as the most important play in the game. Some have even called him “The Senator,” because of his conservative ways.
Jameis Boston
Jameis Boston, a former wide receiver for the Ohio State Buckeyes, graduated from Humble High School in Texas and was a three-year starter. He set school records for receiving yards and pass receptions with 191 and 2,855 yards, respectively. The record of touchdown receptions was set by Michael Jenkins in 2003, but Chris Olave broke it in 2021. Boston averaged 5.89 points per game as a Buckeye, but his career ended prematurely.
Laurinaitis
James Richard Laurinaitis was an American football linebacker who played for the New Orleans Saints and the St. Louis Rams. He played college football at Ohio State where he was a three-time consensus All-American. He won numerous awards during his career at Ohio State, and was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the 2009 NFL Draft. Read on for a look at Laurinaitis’ career and how he came to be an All-American.

Cousineau’s 211 tackles
Cousineau’s 211 tackles were a career high for an OSU linebacker. He averaged 17.5 tackles per game and was named team captain in 1978. The record-setting tackler was a consensus All-American in 1978 and earned a first-team All-American award. After college, Cousineau worked for a number of companies and dabbled in real estate and highway construction.
Pass rush by committee
The OSU football team may be passing on the traditional pass rush this year, but the addition of the new guys is promising. With the departure of Chase Young, Ohio State now has two pass rushers. With the addition of Marcus Hooker and Josh Proctor, the defense should have more flexibility to attack the quarterback down the field. If the pass rush is effective, Ohio State could return to the national championship game. If they can pull off the upset, they could win the Big Ten and possibly go to the national championship game.
Defense
One of the biggest changes in the Ohio State football defense is the move away from the bullet safety position to the stacked safeties. The safety position is the most vulnerable to the spread attack, so the team will use a combination of different defensive schemes to keep the quarterback and opposing quarterbacks off the field. The safety position is the strongest part of the defense, but some players struggle to play it well. For example, Hickman was a huge asset last season, leading the Buckeyes in tackles. The safety position has changed since last season, and the stacked free safety could now play the free safety role. The second-best safeties position is the nickel position, where the player line up against a slot receiver.
Short-yardage situations
A big part of Ohio State’s offense is its running game, but it struggles to find success in short-yardage situations. This year, Ohio State failed to pick up first downs when it needed them, mainly because the offensive line didn’t help matters. On third down against TCU, the Buckeyes ran the ball just seven times for nine yards, but failed to convert any of those plays.
